Your daughter/son is growing up. Not long ago, you made all of her or his decisions. Now she or he is asking the most important questions in her or his life:

  • Who is God?
  • What is my relationship to Jesus Christ?
  • How does God fit into my life?
  • What does it mean to live as a Christian?
  • Who am I?

In our year-long process, 5th and 6th graders prepare to claim the name Christian, when they can "profess with confidence Jesus Christ as their Savior, put their whole trust in his grace, and promise to serve him as their Lord, in union with the church which Christ has opened to people of all ages, nations, and races."

Our program uses the framework of the Christian year (Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, Easter, the great fifty days of Easter and Pentecost). The Christian year helps us think about core doctrines of the Christian faith, including incarnation, baptism, sin, repentance, salvation, discipleship, and ministry. The Bible, The Book of Discipline, The United Methodist Hymnal, and The Book of Worship are utilized.

The confirmation program incorporates the rich heritage of our Wesleyan roots and teaches the understandings we have inherited about prevenient, justifying, and sanctifying grace. Finally, we realize that understandings are important, but they need to be brought to life. If we are to talk about Christ's community, we must also embody it.

Please take a few minutes and look through the schedule that leads us through many activities including classes, retreats, camps, and mission and service projects. During confirmation, many persons including staff and laity are involved in leading and sharing in this important faith journey.

Our primary curriculum resource for the entire confirmation experience will be "Claim the Name." This is a relatively new resource from the United Methodist Publishing House in Nashville. This study focuses on two key areas: developing a relationship with Jesus Christ and living as a Christian in the United Methodist Church.
